How old is my skunk

If a skunk is exhibiting any or all of the above conditions, you should avoid the animal and call your local Animal Control. The animal may have distemper, rabies, or some other disease. Do not attempt to trap, feed, or handle the sick animal. Keep pets, livestock and other humans away from the area where the skunk was seen. If you have found an injured adult, be aware that they can be strong and fast, even when injured. Your best course of action would be to call All Things Wild Rehabilitation to get specific instructions for your situation or contact Animal Control in your area rather than attempt to capture an injured adult.

Move very slowly around skunks. They are extremely nearsighted, so fast movements and loud sounds can startle them and make them spray in defense. Skunks can spray farther than you might think, and they are very accurate and will aim for your eyes.

If the tail is held down aver the anus, however, there is less of a chance they will spray. Put the animal into a small pet carrier with a towel inside and keep the cage away from noise, pets, and children, preferably with a towel over it. Their gestation period often lasts around two months and they give birth to two to 10 offspring at a time.

Baby skunks are called kits. Kits are blind when born, since their eyes are sealed shut until around the age of 3 weeks, according to the San Diego Zoo. They are weaned at 2 months old. After they are weaned, they leave the den and at to 10 to 12 months old they are ready to have their own kits. Skunks have very short lives and often live only around three years. In captivity they can live a little longer, usually seven to eight years.

Until recently, skunks were considered part of the Mustelid family, related to weasels, otters and badgers. If your property provides any of these things, animals will find them. Skunk mating season was in late January and February, so pregnant mother skunks needing comfortable den sites may soon be moving in underneath porches or in spaces under outbuildings. Obviously some skunk mothers have already given birth.

If this happens on your property, WildCare asks you to keep a couple of things in mind. First, as discussed above, the situation is only temporary. Within two months, the skunk family will have moved on. For one thing, skunks thrive on the slugs, snails, insects and grubs that plague your garden.

Especially after a wet winter, gardens will be full of munching pests. Instead of using poisons that can harm the environment, allow your resident skunk to take care of the problem! Skunks also devour lots of rats, mice and other small rodents, providing natural rodent control.

Allowing skunks to do their job will maintain a natural balance of predators and prey in our neighborhoods. Skunks will also eat species that can be dangerous to us, like Black Widow Spiders and scorpions. What great neighbors! A family of skunks in the back yard. Pedialyte is a rehydration solution that is available in drug stores- it should be heated to body temperature and offered every couple hours for the first several feedings.

Feed the baby skunk esbilac powder, mix only enough for 24hrs and keep it refrigerated. The skunk will suck very quickly and take too much formula if you are not in total control. This is why bottles are not suitable to use. To avoid this from occurring feed in a quiet room, go slowly and watch both the skunk and the syringe, if air bubbles appear in the syringe, stop feeding and expel the air, see chart on back for feeding schedule.

Once feeding is finished, wash its face well with a damp face cloth, as formula dries quickly and can cause fur loss. It is very critical that baby skunks are stimulated to urinate before and after every feed. The skunk may be doing it a bit on its own but this may be overflow and if not stimulated the bladder will rupture.
