The thing is about Fred, no matter how self centered he is - he gets the job done with the help of his team.
You'll notice that of course about the whole Mystery Inc. While each of them suffers from some sort of mental disorder that would cause problems for them in most social situations, the social situation of solving crazy mysteries at amusement parks is the perfect environment for their combined issues. Being "the pretty one," Daphne comes from a wealthy background. She is accident prone and almost nearly always finds herself being kidnapped or accidentally breaking something, therefore remaining the center of attention which, similar to narcissism, was based more on dependence.
She always needed to be rescued from said kidnappings, and usually it was Fred to her rescue. Clearly his affection and appreciation for her personal well being and presence kept her disorder fueled. She was the classic "damsel in distress. The interesting thing about Daphne though, in relation to being dependent, is that she got better.
While she started off as a poor model for young girls' confidence look pretty and the big strong man will come rushing to your rescue she turned into a very independent woman. She learned martial arts, she learned how to pick locks and while never as intelligent as Velma or Fred still developed useful problem solving skills. This complete change from being a helpless pretty girl to a self sufficient woman changed the character of Daphne and hopefully inspired many self centered "princesses" to do the same.
Not to be confused with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder , which is a high anxiety disorder that causes bad thoughts and compulsions and what not. No, OCPD is when everything needs to be just so. It has to with order, rules and expectations and this causes anxiety when things are out of a certain expected order. This doesn't mean that Velma expects everything to be in a straight line, just that she expects things to be how she expects them to be. Out of all the gang though, having OCPD and choosing to solve mysteries for a living isn't actually a bad thing.
You see, while it is a disorder, Velma shows that having a certain order to things in life helps you understand what is out of place and is able to provide her with a keen view of the unseen clues.
Velma is very adept at solving puzzles and putting together the pieces, due to her expectations of the order of things, and her constant anxiety that something is amiss. Along with Fred, Velma is the primary case solver and leads the Mystery Inc. Her behavior clearly teaches to have a greater understanding of the world through having a less than flexible attitude towards it. It's an interesting conundrum, but if you think about it long enough it makes sense.
While Shaggy shows hints of true Paranoid personality disorder, it's clearly not full blown as he generally trusts the rest of the Mystery Inc. Fast-forward 35 years or so, and to my astonishment, my children loved it just as much as I had. I probably wound up watching more Scooby-Doo episodes with my kids than I had watched as a kid. Evidence suggests that my experience is not unique. A new series featuring celebrity-guest voices, Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? And a new animated movie, Scoob!
Which raises the obvious question: What on earth is going on? The essential premise, for those not weaned on the show, is straightforward. A group of four teenagers—some of whom seem considerably older more on this in a moment —and a Great Dane, Scooby-Doo, drive around in a van called the Mystery Machine in search of, yes, mysteries.
The gang, like its later Hanna-Barbera cousin, Josie and the Pussycats , was originally conceived as a band that would play a musical number each episode.
The mystery they find almost always appears at first to be paranormal—a vindictive ghost or ghoul, a rampaging dinosaur—but is ultimately revealed as an elaborate hoax involving disguises, holograms, hidden wires, phosphorescent paint, or some combination thereof. Scooby also has opposible thumbs and can use his front paws like hands. He has a black nose and wears an off-yellow, diamond shaped-tagged blue-green collar with an "SD" his initials and has four toes on each foot and unlike other dogs, Scooby only has one pad on the sole of each of his feet.
Scooby-Doo and Shaggy share several personality traits, mostly being constantly hungry, being scared easily and most of the time refuse to help others, but their friends Velma Dinkley , Daphne Blake and Fred Jones encourage them to go after the costumed villains usually with " Scooby Snacks ", a biscuit-like dog treat or cookie snack usually shaped like a bone or as shown in later versions of the cartoons Scooby's dog tag , though occasionally appealing to Scooby-Doo inherent loyalty and courage to take a more heroic stance.
His catch phrase , usually howled at the end of every mystery, is "Scooby-Dooby-Doo! When he solves cases with his nephew Scrappy-Doo , he's very protective of him, as he often runs after him to prevent him from going straight to the monster or ghost.
He has peculiar and extraordinary abilities, such as being able to talk in English, although not without pronouncing most words as if they begin with an "R", though most people are able to understand him perfectly if they acknowledge that he can speak at all. He can also talk to other animals mostly dogs , which comes in handy whenever the gang needs help or more information.
He can stand on his hind legs, which he gradually does more often as the years have gone by. Dealing with Scrappy, would get him on his hind legs a lot, when he wanted to keep himself and Scrappy away from a monster. He can also morph his body to mimic any and all monsters he has encountered, along with some humans, too. His tail is prehensile, being used to get him out of certain situations, if need be. He also has a great sense of balance, as he can ride on a unicycle while juggling and balancing a fishbowl on his head.
He's shown to be a master dancer, as he got a perfect score on the WWE's victory dance, and avoided Kane's attacks. When he was a puppy, Scooby Snacks would make him blast off like a rocket, before gliding gently back down to earth.
Like many dogs he has an incredible sense of smell, earning his nose the nickname "Super Sniffer". He has a fully prehensile tail he can use to swing from or press buttons. Both his head and tail are malleable and useful as a communication aid or creating a distraction.
But his tail often gives him away while in disguise. He had amazing video game skill when he was a pup and referred to by Shaggy as the Video Champ of Coolsville.
Scooby has both noticed and gained the attention of the opposite sex over the years sometimes, occasionally, even human. Scooby has joined Shaggy in taking odd jobs, for extra cash, and other times when he's forced to take an actual profession to support himself when Mystery Inc. Launched into the 21st century, the series follows the basic formula of the original show, with the full gang solving mysteries wherever they go.
The characters remain true to the original show, but I feel Velma, Daphne and Fred receive more characterisation here which is great. Shaggy and Scooby are their usual goofy, hungry, scared selves. There's plenty of other guest appearances as well most of which, truth be told, the kids won't know but hey ho including Simple Plan, who lend their vocals to the classic theme tune of the show. Keeping on the theme song, I mean what can I say.
It's a classic. This series also features musical chase scenes, and they're simply a delight. Plenty of great songs are used throughout the 3 seasons. A few more things. The inclusion of holiday themed episodes are a nice touch to the show, including A Scooby-Doo! Christmas and A Scooby-Doo Halloween. The tone of the series nicely blends comedic elements with the scarier elements, quite similar to the Scooby-Doo Show.
Lastly, the gang's outfits are slightly different in this incarnation. Whilst Shaggy and Velma are pretty much the same, the noticeable changes are in the outfits of Fred and Daphne. Whilst I do miss the iconic ascot and scarf worn by the pair, this modern take is nothing to complain about, and gives the show its own distinctive identity. Overall, What's New, Scooby-Doo?
The whole gang solving mysteries, getting up to all sorts of antics and providing you with laughs, scares and much more. What more do you want from this team of mystery solving teens and their canine companion? Details Edit. Release date September 14, United States. United States.
